Field note
Chemical peel aftercare
Get recovery instructions for the actual peel performed, then plan products, activities, and follow-up around them.
Talk through your optionsThe type of peel changes the recovery plan.
Chemical peel aftercare depends on the peel performed and your individual response. Before leaving, get written instructions for cleansing, moisturizing, sun protection, makeup, activity, and restarting products. Ask what healing should look like and who to contact with concerns. Do not use a universal day-by-day schedule for every peel.
Confirm what was performed.
Record the peel name, treatment area, and provider. Ask how the peel’s depth or intensity changes the recovery instructions. The AAD’s chemical peel FAQ explains that superficial, medium, and deep peels have different healing and at-home care requirements.
Ask the provider to write the plan for the actual peel rather than referring you to a generic product routine. Read our chemical peel service guide if you are still comparing appointments.
Make the product instructions specific.
- What should I cleanse with, and when?
- Which moisturizer or other instructed product should I use?
- When and how should I use sun protection?
- When can makeup and each of my usual active products return?
Bring your product names to the provider rather than asking only when “normal skincare” can resume. A routine with exfoliating acids can deserve a different answer from one with only a basic cleanser and moisturizer.
Plan around the healing instructions.
Tell the provider about outdoor work, exercise, swimming, travel, or an upcoming event. Ask what should change and whether the appointment timing is appropriate. Do not assume a peel called “lunchtime” fits every schedule.
The AAD advises against picking, rubbing, or scratching healing skin. Follow the provider’s instructions instead of trying to hurry visible peeling with another exfoliating product. Use our downtime planning checklist to organize the practical questions.
Know the follow-up route.
Ask what response is expected and which changes require assessment. If pain is worsening, symptoms are severe, or something differs from the instructions, contact the treating professional promptly and seek appropriate care for urgent concerns.
Save the written plan and the follow-up contact before leaving. A public beauty guide cannot assess healing from a description. Our form is for general inquiries.
Keep the next treatment a separate decision.
Ask when your skin should be reassessed before another peel or a different service. Tell the next provider what was performed. The special-event treatment timeline helps organize dates without prescribing intervals.
Request help comparing local peel consultations if you are choosing a starting point. Keep medical history and current recovery concerns with a qualified treating professional.
