Research-based planning guide
IPL photofacial or melasma assessment? Start with the diagnosis
If you have facial pigmentation, find out what it is before booking an IPL photofacial. Melasma, post-inflammatory marks and other skin changes can require different approaches. A treatment menu or photograph can't establish a diagnosis or determine which device is suitable for you.

Describe the pigment before naming a procedure
Record when it appeared, whether it changes and what products or treatments you have tried. Bring unfiltered photos if the appearance varies. Tell the clinician about previous reactions and anything that made the pigmentation worse.
The AAD's melasma guidance explains that a dermatologist can distinguish melasma from another condition and tailor treatment. Light-based procedures may be part of selected plans, rather than a universal first step.
Use the consultation to compare approaches
| Question | What you need to understand |
|---|---|
| What is the diagnosis? | Why the clinician thinks that explanation fits |
| Why consider IPL? | The specific goal and evidence for your situation |
| What else is appropriate? | Skin care, prescribed treatment or other options |
| What could worsen pigment? | Risks relevant to your skin and history |
| How is response reviewed? | When to reassess rather than repeat automatically |
A practice should be able to explain when it would recommend no procedure or a dermatology referral. A package purchase shouldn't come before that discussion.
Discuss maintenance and sun exposure
Ask what role sun protection and ongoing care play in the proposed plan. Don't assume a successful procedure means pigmentation can never return. Tell the clinician about outdoor work, travel and recent tanning so the schedule reflects your circumstances.
If a spot is changing, bleeding or otherwise concerning, seek a medical assessment rather than trying to fade it cosmetically. Avoid using another person's before-and-after result as evidence that your skin change has the same cause.
Check the real provider and next step
Confirm who evaluates you, who performs the procedure and how follow-up is handled. Ask for the device name and a written explanation of cost and alternatives. You can take time to decide.
