Laser hair removal and medications: what to bring to a consultation
Before laser hair removal, give the treating clinician a current list of prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, supplements and skin products. Ask how each affects treatment planning. Don't stop a prescribed medicine or use an online “safe medication” list to clear yourself for a session.

Bring a list that can be checked
Use the exact product name, strength where known and how you use it. Include products applied only occasionally and medicines recently stopped. If you aren't sure what a product contains, bring the container or a photograph of the label.
The AAD's laser-preparation guidance specifically asks patients to disclose medicines, including nonprescription products. The clinician also needs information about skin and health history.
Include the timing
| Information | What to record |
|---|---|
| Current medicine | Name and prescribing clinician, if applicable |
| Recent change | When it was started, stopped or changed |
| Skin product | Active ingredient and where it is applied |
| Previous reaction | What happened and whether treatment was needed |
| Planned procedure | Area and proposed appointment date |
You don't need to send this full record through an ordinary referral form. Ask the treating practice how to provide health information securely.
Ask who makes the decision
The booking team should explain who reviews suitability and when that review happens. A receptionist's general scheduling response isn't the same as clinical clearance. If the laser provider wants a medicine changed, ask them to coordinate with the prescriber rather than changing it yourself.
Ask for a written answer about whether to proceed, delay or seek another assessment. If a waiting period is recommended, ask what it is based on for the particular medicine, skin and device. There isn't one interval that applies to every product and person.
Update the practice between visits
A course of laser sessions can span changes in medicines, health and sun exposure. Tell the practice before the next visit rather than assuming the first consultation covers the whole course indefinitely.
If treatment is postponed, check the package's expiry and rescheduling terms. A commercial deadline should not pressure you into skipping a suitability review.
Read the questions before laser treatment and package-terms checklist. To request local help, describe your goal without including medical records. Indianapolis Beauty Connect is an independent information and inquiry resource; the treating clinician determines whether a procedure is appropriate.
